Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 medium sliced onion
  • 1 medium sliced carrot
  • 2 cups chopped napa cabbage
  • 23 tablespoons gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 6 cups seafood or chicken broth
  • 2 cups mixed seafood (shrimp, mussels, squid, or your choice)
  • thick wheat noodles, ramen, or udon noodles (as needed)
  • green onions (sliced, for garnish)
  • sesame oil (for garnish)
  • oil (for sautéing)
  • rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar (as a non-alcoholic alternative)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sliced onions. Sauté until fragrant and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Incorporate sliced carrots and napa cabbage. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the vegetables start to soften.
  3. Stir in gochugaru and soy sauce. Cook for another minute until the spices are well combined.
  4. Pour in seafood or chicken broth. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  5. Add your choice of seafood. If using shrimp, mussels, and squid, cook for 3-5 minutes or until they are just cooked through.
  6. While the seafood cooks, prepare the noodles in a separate pot according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  7. Once the seafood is cooked and the broth has a rich flavor, add the cooked noodles to the pot. Stir to combine, and let everything heat through for another minute.
  8. Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame oil. Enjoy your homemade Jjamppong!
