Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Ground Cloves
  • Zest of 1 Orange
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter (melted)
  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar (Confectioners' Sugar)
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Orange Juice
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, a teaspoon of the granulated sugar, and the active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the remaining granulated sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Whisk gently to combine.
  3. Gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Lightly grease a large bowl, place the dough in it, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling by mixing the light brown sugar, ground cloves, and orange zest in a small bowl. Add the melted butter and mix until it forms a thick paste.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it into a large rectangle, approximately 18×12 inches.
  8. Spread the orange clove filling over the dough, leaving a small border along one edge. Roll the dough into a tight log and pinch the seam to seal.
  9. Cut the log into 12 even slices and arrange them in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  11. While the rolls are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar, fresh orange juice, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  12. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls and serve immediately.

Keywords: Use fresh orange zest for the best flavor. If you need an egg substitute, a flax egg can work, though it may alter the texture slightly.
